Daily program: Discovery of Northern Taiwan
Day 1: Arrival in Taipei
Arrival at Taoyuan Airport, transfer to your hotel by private car (without guide). Afternoon and meals free.
Day 2: Taipei - Sanxia & Yingge ~ 3 hours drive. (PDJ / DIN)
On your first day, you’ll explore Taipei City, visiting the beautiful Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and the impressive National Palace Museum, which boasts the world’s largest collection of Chinese art. You’ll then witness the fascinating Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Martyrs’ Monument, and finish with a visit to a temple and the city’s craft center.
In the afternoon, you’ll set off to explore the island’s folk arts. 22 km south of Taipei lies the small town of Sanxia, bustling with activity and decor straight out of the Japanese colonial era. Its artisan streets and Zushi Temple, with its engravings, sculptures, bronze columns and bas-reliefs, are definitely worth the detour. Following this initial visit, you’ll head to the small town of Yingge, renowned for its works of art and crafts, including pottery, tea sets, and delicate statues. Return to Taipei in the late afternoon.
In the evening, you will head to Longshan Temple, the most famous temple in Taiwan, and visit the adjacent Huaxi Night Market. Afterwards, you will head to Taipei 101 Tower, where you can enjoy the delicious xiaolongbao (steamed dumplings) of Din Tai Fung. You are then free to decide whether you want to go up to the tower’s observatory (391 meters high) in the world’s fastest elevator to enjoy the night view of the city (ticket price not included in the price). Overnight at your hotel, Just Sleep Ximending 3*+ (or similar).
Day 3: Pingxi & Shifen - Jiufen & the Northeast Coast ~ 3 hours drive. (B)
Today you’ll head to Pingxi and Shifen, small traditional mountain villages crossed by the railway. These two villages are among Taiwan’s most popular destinations, where tradition and history meet.
Your first stop is Pingxi, where you can try your hand at releasing lanterns, symbols of peace and prosperity, on which you can write your wishes before releasing them into the sky. Next, you’ll head to Shifen and its ancient streets, full of romantic and deeply nostalgic beauty. Not far from there is the famous Shifen Waterfall, located in the middle of the forest and which you can reach on foot. You can admire its somewhat isolated setting, and the mist rising from the basin can lead to the appearance of rainbows.
You’ll then head to the village of Jiufen, one of Taiwan’s must-see destinations. With its teahouses and narrow streets, red lanterns, and sweeping views of the China Sea, Jiufen is a place steeped in history and tradition, inspiring many artists over the years.
The rest of your excursion will take you to the most northeastern part of the region, located by the sea, which offers astonishing landscapes: coral reefs, amazing rock formations transforming the coast into a veritable sculpture garden and mountains plunging into the sea.
Following this, you will return to the land towards the old mining town of Jinguashi, a fascinating journey into the region’s past, notably with its golden waterfall, with its colorful hues evoking the precious metal once mined there. This visit will also be an opportunity to visit an old gold mine, now abandoned, witness to the tumultuous past shared by Taiwan and Japan, and also to admire the sunset. Return to your hotel, Just Sleep Ximending 3*+ (or similar) by private vehicle.
Day 4: Yangmingshan-Beitou ~ 2 hours drive round trip. (PDJ)
Early morning departure by private vehicle towards the North of Taipei, with Beitou and Yangmingshan National Park on the program. Beitou is a district of Taipei located in a valley carved by a river at the origin of the hot springs of the region, and which are the main attractions. Here you can discover the history behind the place by visiting notable places: the Beitou Library (Taiwan’s first green library) or the thermal valley which is the very heart of the hot springs of the region.
Then, you will head to Yangmingshan, which is the third largest national park in Taiwan, and which boasts natural landscapes that change color with the seasons: flower fields in spring, snow-capped mountains in winter. During your visit to the park, you will have the opportunity to visit places where traces of volcanic activity can be found, but also the plains and hills of Qingtiangang and the flower fields of Zhuzihu. The visit to the park will also be an opportunity to discover the former summer residence and reception of foreign visitors of President Chiang Kai-shek, today a place with obvious intellectual and cultural echoes. To recharge your batteries at the end of the day, you will have the opportunity to take a foot bath in one of the many hot springs in the park. You will then be taken back by private vehicle either to your hotel – Just Sleep Ximending 3*+ (or similar), or to the Shilin Night Market.
Day 5: Keelung and Yehliu ~ 2h round trip. (B)
For this fifth day, you will head towards Keelung, the first meeting place between Taiwan and the West and a city inevitably full of history. Between the beautiful Chung Cheng Park and its statue of the Goddess of Mercy and the city’s port, another aspect of the North is offered to you for this day. After that, you will head a little further north along the coast, to the cape of the Yehliu geopark, where the combination of strong winds and marine erosion has resulted in the formation of rocks with singular shapes (busts, shoes, etc.). Return to your Just Sleep Ximending 3*+ hotel (or similar) and end of the day at leisure. End of our services (+ late evening flight)
