How to explore Taiwan?

Due to the relatively small size of the island, it is very convenient to travel to Taiwan.

An extensive network of trains and buses is available throughout the country, connecting major cities. Each city has a domestic airport, from which you can access more distant islands. These can also be reached by ferry, which is more affordable for shorter distances.

Be careful, however, because the island is very mountainous, which can lengthen the duration of certain journeys, especially if you plan to go to places that are quite remote and poorly served by transport.

For example, if you want to travel from Taipei to Alishan, you might want to take an overnight bus, as Alishan doesn’t have a train station for long-distance trains. This way, you’ll arrive in time to watch the sunrise and have the whole day to yourself, rather than arriving mid-afternoon and losing a day if you’re leaving Taipei in the morning.
