Some pictures of Hualien

Introduction to Hualien
During your trip to the east coast, you’ll be advised to stop in the city of Hualien, as it’s the gateway to the Taroko Gorge. However, it wouldn’t be fair to talk about this city only because of its proximity to the gorge: in fact, it offers a rather relaxing stay, especially if you’re feeling tired from your Taroko hikes and other adventures. Moreover, it contains places steeped in history, giving visitors a glimpse into the island’s past.
Following the earthquake of April 3, 2024, Taiwan remains accessible to travelers. The city of Hualien, the epicenter of the earthquake, is once again accessible by road!

Taroko Gorge, a major tourist attraction in the country, also remains closed until further notice. It will take several months to explore the gorge’s trails again. If it ever does, it will likely be short, quick walks to viewpoints. It seems no more. The trails/mountains are badly damaged.
What to do in and around Hualien?
Rafting on the Hsiukuluan River
Located south of Taroko and Hualien, it flows into the Pacific Ocean and offers some lovely rapids that will please rafting and thrill seekers.

Dolphin and Whale Watching Cruise
Taiwanese waters are home to nearly thirty species of cetaceans (whales and dolphins), and the Pacific Ocean is ideal for observing them. You can now explore them from the port of Hualien!

Hualien Martyrs’ Chapel
Built in honor of the fallen soldiers of the Chinese Civil War (1927-1936, 1945-1950), it offers serenity to those who visit it. A favorite with photographers, this chapel is located in the equally restful Meilunshan Park.

Hualien Pine Garden
A place of residence for Japanese kamikazes before their departure on missions during the Second World War, this beautiful place is now a place where people come to rest (like the Chapel of the Martyrs and its park) and attend some exhibitions in its cultural center.
