Located 30 minutes by plane from Taitung (or 2 hours by boat) and 2 hours by ferry from Kenting (the southern tip of Taiwan), Lanyu is larger than its neighbor Lüdao, and has at its heart a strong Tao (or Yami) identity, the smallest ethnic group in Taiwan (3,000 people). Of Australasian descent (a region that includes Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea), they have their own language, and the atmosphere on the island clearly contrasts with the “Chinese” culture of Taiwan. The environment seems very rustic and far from the rampant modernization to which we may be accustomed, with its lush vegetation and volcanic rocks.
It is advisable to rent a scooter on site (with an international license required, unlike Lüdao), which will make your travels easier (no taxis and very few buses). You will then be ready to explore life on the island, through the arts, cuisine and other places that demonstrate the connection between the locals and their habitat. Strangely shaped rocks and animals, seaside roads with the horizon in front of you and a light sea breeze caressing your face (watch out for dogs and goats, very numerous on the island), picnic at the top of a mountain facing the sea, scuba diving, tasting fried flying fish, guest rooms in the colors of the Tao… A unique experience that you will not find anywhere else!
