Taitung 台東

Some pictures of Taitung

Introduction to Taitung
While Taitung City itself may not be the most fascinating city in Taiwan, the surrounding area is full of scenic views and secrets to discover. It also provides privileged access to two of Formosa’s best-kept treasures: Green Island and Orchid Island.

What to do in the Taitung region?
Taitung International Hot Air Balloon Festival
Every summer, towards the end of June, for six weeks, dozens of hot air balloons rise into the sky and offer spectators the opportunity to ride in one of them. The festival is very popular, especially among those wishing to admire the sunrise and sunset.

Paragliding and hot air ballooning in Luye
Arguably one of the most beautiful regions on the east coast, the Luye Plateau boasts tea plantations and rice paddies as far as the eye can see. It’s the perfect setting to gain height and admire the surroundings, either by paraglider or hot air balloon.

Lake Chiaming
Nicknamed “Angel’s Tears” for its brilliance and the mystical aura it exudes, Chiaming will delight fans of long hikes (between 3 and 4 days for the round trip) and lovers of lost paradise (a sensation sometimes found elsewhere in Taiwan). Indeed, being located at nearly 3,500 meters, the lake and its surroundings promise varied landscapes due to the changing climate and altitude of the places. The nights spent in the wooden cabins along the way will be an opportunity to admire a sea of stars above your heads, enough to make the expedition even more unforgettable.
Please note, however, that Chiaming is only accessible with the help of a trekking agency and a permit in your possession (request at least one month in advance).

Meeting the Aboriginal Cultures of Taiwan
While the entire East Coast is an opportunity to discover the island’s aboriginal cultures, the Taitung region has several villages and other “cultural parks” within its territory allowing you to meet the Amis, Hakka, Rukai, etc. Through their songs, dances and gastronomy, these people keep the traditions of their ancestors alive.
Some villages require the accompaniment of a local guide to visit them.

Sanxiantai Nature Reserve
Made famous by its bridge, which strongly resembles the undulations of an Asian dragon’s body, Sanxiantai Island is worth a visit for its reefs, coral reefs, and tropical fish. As a nature reserve, the area is very well preserved and offers an excellent vantage point for admiring the sunset.
