Keelung 基隆

Some pictures of Keelung

Presentation of Keelung
Thirty kilometers north of Taipei lies the port city of Keelung, the site of Taiwan’s first contact with the West, which later became a strategic point for the island’s various occupants. Keelung is therefore worth a day trip for its history, to visit its museums, abandoned houses, and especially its night market, famous for its delicious seafood.
Spanish, French, and Japanese: all have succeeded one another in Keelung over the centuries. This makes Keelung a city full of history, but also of a rather painful past (bombings during the Second World War…). Today, Keelung is experiencing a tourist and economic boom: the second port of the island (behind Kaohsiung), it welcomes more and more cruise ships from China or Japan. If Keelung is the rainiest city in all of Taiwan, with nearly 300 days of rain per year, it has a more authentic feel at its heart, similar to the feeling given by the smaller villages of Northern Taiwan (Jiufen in particular) and is definitely worth the detour! In addition, the city is explored on foot and the surrounding hills offer numerous trails.
