Introduction to Longshan Temple in Taipei
Longshan Temple is a true survivor with almost invisible scars. Crossed by troubled centuries (conflicts, disasters), it has managed to remain standing (after many reconstructions) and perfectly embodies the Taiwanese identity of today. Built in 1738, it was first and foremost built by and for the community, and today is located in the oldest district of Taipei.
A clever blend of Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist beliefs, Longshan Temple is a symbol of Taiwan’s openness to the world, its many faces, and the beliefs that inhabit it. This may partly explain why the temple is so lively, with curious visitors, people coming to pray, and locals happy to welcome so many people into their community.
