When to travel to Taiwan?
Winter (December to March)
Winter is often described as the best time to travel to Taiwan. Temperatures rarely drop below 10°C, and it’s the busiest season for festivities. Indeed, the Chinese New Year, which takes place in February, brings a very special atmosphere to the streets and the minds of the Taiwanese. Be careful, however, because train and plane tickets sell out faster during this time. If you like snow, you may find it at higher altitudes (Taiwan has many mountains).
Spring (March to May)
Spring offers temperatures between 20 and 25°C, making hiking and cycling very pleasant. In addition, the season is not punctuated by many public holidays, making visits smoother and less crowded. Be careful, because late spring (in May) marks the beginning of the rainy and typhoon season, with precipitation becoming heavier and lasting until late September or early October.
Summer
Summer can be quite intense in Taiwan. High temperatures (sometimes above 35°C) and heavy rain (typhoon season) make visiting the island quite difficult and not very conducive to walking or cycling. It’s really from the end of August that the weather becomes more pleasant, but with still high temperatures, Taiwan being very humid in summer, especially in the north.
Autumn
Autumn marks the end of the typhoon and heavy rain season, but also the drop in temperatures, which then hover around 20-25°C, similar to those experienced in spring. Many sunny days await you, with very little rain. October is also a month of celebrations, with barbecues, military parades, and fireworks. It’s undoubtedly a very pleasant time of year to visit Taiwan.
Note: It’s worth noting that climate differences exist between the northern and southern regions. For example, the north (Taipei) will be wetter and more humid than the south (Tainan and Kaohsiung), the latter enjoying a sunnier and drier climate. However, on a national scale, summer remains rainy across the country.
